The College Football Playoff experiment of giving the top four seeds to the four highest-ranked conference champions has come to an end after one season.

On Thursday, the committee unanimously voted to move to straight seeding this upcoming season. In the tweaked format, the top four seeds and first-round byes will go to the selection committee's top four teams.

The expected change would have the seeds match the selection committee’s final rankings, regardless of conference affiliation. A move to straight seeding would also allow independent Notre Dame to receive a top-four seed and a first-round bye.
