An 8-year-old girl died Friday evening after a large fireworks display misfired in a Buena Park neighborhood in Orange County, authorities announced.

The girl was fatally injured when a "large illegal fireworks display" set up by a local resident went awry, triggering an explosion, police said.

An 8-year-old Buena Park girl was killed on Friday night, July 4th in an explosion that police suspect involved illegal fireworks, and a homeowner was arrested, police said. Just before 9:45 p.m., Buena Park police officers were patroling the 8000 block of Cornflower Circle after observing a large number of fireworks being detonated in the area.
