Even as peace talks continue, the U.S. struck Iran near the Strait of Hormuz and Iran retaliated against a U.S. base in Kuwait, while Israel expanded its assault in Lebanon by issuing evacuation orders for the southern city,
The attacks come amid the ongoing negotiations to end the U.S. and Israeli joint military campaign in Iran, which has led to thousands of deaths and spiked oil prices worldwide. The larger ceasefire between the sides continues to hold, despite the strikes in the Arabian Gulf coast over the past several days.
The strikes on an Iranian launch site and a U.S. base in the region followed a warning from Trump that if Iran didn't start acceding to demands, the U.S. would "finish them off."
For the second time in three days, the military hit targets in what it called acts of self-defense, as a potential cease-fire hangs in the balance.
President Trump, speaking at a Cabinet meeting on May 27, said Iran "thought they were going to outwait me" in regard to making a peace deal.
As the U.S. and Iran keep up the bluster but appear ready to de-escalate, Israel expands deadly attacks on the complex war's other front in Lebanon.
Iran and the United States have signaled they are closing in on an agreement to turn the existing ceasefire that ended weeks of conflict into a more long-lasting settlement.
