Waffle House announced it will be adding a $0.50 surcharge to all egg items on the menu sold at its more than 2,000 locations because of soaring egg prices caused by the bird flu. The surcharge went into effect Monday.

In a letter from Waffle House's headquarters in Norcross on Monday, the diner chain has implemented a 50-cent surcharge per egg to all menus. The company said, rather than increasing prices across the menu, this is a temporary targeted charge tied to the unprecedented rise in egg prices caused by bird flu.

Waffle House is charging its customers an extra US$0.50 per egg in response to the increasingly high shell egg prices being seen across the U.S.

Waffle House serves around 272 million eggs per year, according to its website, well surpassing even its titular waffles, of which it sells just 124 million. "We are continuously monitoring egg prices and will adjust or remove the surcharge as market conditions allow," the statement ended.

In a statement shared with Nexstar, a Cracker Barrel spokesperson suggested that its new egg deal is a direct response to Waffle House’s decision to begin charging a surcharge for every egg ordered.

Those looking to order eggs with their Waffle House meal should now expect to pay a 50-cent surcharge per egg.

According to its website, the nationwide chain known for its waffles and crispy hash browns serves 272 million eggs at nearly 2,000 restaurant locations that are open daily around the clock. Waffle House has no Michigan locations – the closest looks to be an hour south of Detroit in Toledo,
