HONG KONG — A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck near one of Tibet ’s holiest cities Tuesday, killing at least 126 people, Chinese state media reported. The earthquake, which was recorded just after 9 a.m. (8 p.m. ET Monday), was centered at a depth of nearly 6 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake epicenter was about 75 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of Mount Everest, the iconic peak shared by Nepal and China. The region where the earthquake occurred is prone to seismic activity due to the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Tremors were also felt in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, as well as Bhutan and northern India. China says about 1,500 fire and rescue workers have been deployed to search for people in the rubble.
