Edmonton Oilers tempted fate once too often on Saturday, and this time they paid for it. They dug yet another deep first-period hole against a spirited Vancouver Canucks squad, allowing all 3 goals in 3½ minutes late in the first period including a pair of powerplay tallies by first star Quinn Hughes.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Quinn Hughes scored two power-play goals and the struggling Vancouver Canucks beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 on Saturday night. Danton Heinen also scored and J.T. Miller had two assists as the Canucks won for just the second time in eight games (2-4-2). Thatcher Demko had 13 saves.

Klingberg has great puck skills and is a good skater. He is a six-time 40+ point defender. He adds a lot of firepower to the Oilers' backend.

Dallas needs Klingberg more than the Oilers. Their other three right-shot D — Matt Dumba, Ilya Lyubushkin and Nils Lundkvist — haven’t scored a goal all season long. He wants to play on a Cup contender and wherever he signs, he’s in audition mode for next season.

In a wild track meet of a game, with Colorado scoring the first three goals, then Edmonton the next four, the Oilers won 4-3 in Denver on Thursday night. In total, the Grade A shots were 17 for the Oilers, eight for the Avs, with the subset of more dangerous 5-alarm shots nine for Edmonton, five for Colorado.

Everything is pointing to the Oilers being a busy team at the upcoming trade deadline, but what part of the roster should they target?

There has been a lot of speculation connecting the Edmonton Oilers to free-agent defenseman John Klingberg over the past few days. The last time we saw Klingberg in the NHL was in 2023-24 when he was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs and it was not pretty.

Vasily Podkolzin has been a great addition to the Oilers. Stan Bowman moved a fourth-round pick for the Russian forward, but it could be the Oilers best trade before the end of the season.

Troy Stecher and Josh Brown saw a big dip in ice time against the Los Angeles Kings. The Oilers took home a massive two points last night with a 1-0 decision over the Kings. Connor McDavid scored the only goal on the back of an incredible shift from Leon Draisaitl.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 6. Made a swell seam pass to set up McDavid’s first period Grade A. He got wiped out hard by massive Tanner Jeannot in the second but hung in there. Slammed a slot shot at net half-way through the third but failed to drain it. GAS: ES +2/-0; ST 1/0
