Mexico sent 10,000 troops to stop fentanyl. It remains elusive.Troops in Nogales, Mexico, have found 150 fentanyl pills, according to official statistics. Meanwhile, U.S. officials across the border have seized more than 400,000.
Trump, Mexico and tariff
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum told supporters in a massive rally on Sunday that dialogue and respect had prevailed in achieving a pause on U.S. tariffs and that the sovereignty of Mexico would always come first.
The bill does not link tariffs to fentanyl smuggling but seeks expanded authority to sanction state-owned or state-controlled Chinese entities, including banks, involved in financing foreign opioid trafficking. The measure also would have the U.S. government track more chemicals that can be used to make methamphetamines.
The taxes proposed by Trump have caused a gaping wound in the decades-old North American trade partnership, and Canada has felt compelled to quickly take aggressive countermeasures.
