Gianluigi Donnarumma’s PSG fallout – why he no longer fits and why other clubs should still want him
Gianluigi Donnarumma won the Champions League last season, reached the Club World Cup final with Paris Saint-Germain — and yet, he finds himself potentially on the way out of the Parc des Princes.
Today, Donnarumma is out of the PSG project with one year left in his contract which runs until the summer of 2026. So what happened in the last few weeks? Why are the European champions willing to let him go?
Gianluigi Donnarumma has confirmed he is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain after being axed from the squad for Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup.
Gianluigi Donnarumma has claimed “someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group” at Paris Saint-Germain. The Italian goalkeeper’s comments came after PSG head coach Luis Enrique said his omission from the squad for Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup match against Tottenham Hotspur was because they want a “different goalkeeping profile”.
I talian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was left out of the PSG squad travelling to Udine for the 2025 edition of the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham taking place on Wednesday (as always you can catch the action on Paramount+ ).
Therefore, the table has been laid. Donnarumma will be leaving PSG and there are no shortage of suitors for the 26-year-old shot-stopper. Manchester City, Bayern and Galatasaray have emerged amongst the clubs linked to the Italian but there are other possibilities on the horizon for the former Milan man.
Despite the arrival of Chevalier, Donnarumma will not be forced into an unsatisfactory move and is prepared to wait it out in the increasingly tense surroundings of the French capital. L’Équipe claim that the “rift” between player and club is “complete” barely two months after their Champions League-winning high.
