Jan 19, 2025 · Marcus Garvey (born August 17, 1887, St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica—died June 10, 1940, London, England) was a charismatic Black leader who organized the first important American Black nationalist movement (1919–26), based in New York City’s Harlem.

In 1916, he moved to the United States and established a UNIA branch in New York City 's Harlem district. Emphasising unity between Africans and the African diaspora, he campaigned for an end to European colonial rule in Africa and advocated the political unification of the continent.

Aug 31, 2020 · Marcus Garvey was a Jamaican-born printer who as a young man became keenly aware of the severe discrimination against Black people, particularly dark skinned people, internationally. He later moved to London where he met several Black Nationalists seeking to end white European colonialism in Africa.

Nov 3, 2013 · On 8 July, Garvey delivered an address, titled “The Conspiracy of the East St. Louis Riots”, at Lafayette Hall in Harlem. During the speech, he declared the riot was “one of the bloodiest outrages against mankind”.

In March 1916, Garvey moved to Harlem, New York in the United States. He started speaking on street corners at night and lecturing at various halls and churches, spreading his powerful message of unity, social freedom, political freedom and economic freedom for Black people.

A black nationalist, Marcus Garvey immigrated to Harlem in 1916. There he established Liberty Hall as headquarters for a movement that would grow to almost 2 million members. The Marcus Garvey Memorial Park interrupts Fifth Avenue between 120th and 124th Streets.
