He played college football for the Tennessee Volunteers, winning the Maxwell, Davey O'Brien, and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm awards as a senior en route to victory in the 1997 SEC Championship Game. Manning was selected first overall in the 1998 NFL draft by the Colts and served as their starting quarterback from 1998 to 2010.

In a 59-31 Tennessee triumph at Kentucky (11/22/1997), Manning secured CNN/SI College Football Player of the Week laurels with his 25-for-35, 523-yard, five-touchdown performance; Marcus Nash was on the receiving end of seven of those passes for 195 yards and three scores.
