The eruption of Laki, one of the most catastrophic volcanic events in history, began in June 1783 and lasted for eight long months. Located in the remote landscapes of Iceland, the Laki volcano expelled an estimated 14 cubic kilometers of basalt lava and vast clouds of sulfur dioxide and fluorine gases.
