Two key works by Alexis Preller featured in the Evening Sale: ‘Still Life with Flowers, Fruit, Shell, and Vase’ and ‘The Hay Cart’. After pivotal travels in the late 1940s, Preller painted this still life featuring the broken Persian vase his mother gave him as a young man, a symbol of personal history woven into formal experimentation. In The Hay Cart, the impact of meeting Hieronymus Bosch in Paris becomes clear, enriching Preller’s visual language with new layers of symbolism and imagination.
