We’d like to clear up some confusion about how to use emergency contraception (EC). One of the questions we received was from someone who took the pill before having sex. That is not the correct way to use it. Emergency contraception should only be taken after unprotected sex, and it works best when used as soon as possible — ideally within 12 hours, but up to 72 hours after sex. If it’s taken before sex, it will not prevent pregnancy. Like every contraceptive, effectiveness depends on using it
