What is RPE/RIR and how should you use them to get more gains? RPE stands for rate of perceived exertion. The most common interpretation of this as it relates to lifting weights, is that an RPE of 10 means you could not have done another repetition. While an RPE of 7 means you could have done 3 more. RPE of 5 means you could do 5 more & so on & so forth RIR stands for ‘repetitions in reserve’ & is essentially the same thing as RPE just expressed differently. An RIR of 0 means you could not have
