Small coin big moment in South African minting history Today we are talking about the ZAR threepence also called the tickey. It was struck from 1892 to 1897 in sterling silver. In 1892 President Paul Kruger ordered the first run from the Royal Prussian Mint in Berlin because the mint in Pretoria was not ready yet. That is why 1893 is special. It is the first year these threepence coins were struck in South Africa. I am holding an 1893 tickey in my hand and it feels like a tiny piece of history.
